The Dashon Goldson rumor mill has focused primarily on whether or not the 49ers would franchise their star free safety. The rumor mill is now taking a bit of a right turn as we have our first rumor connecting Goldson with another team. The Buffalo News is reporting that Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson has been making a sales pitch to Goldson, Dwayne Bowe and Greg Jennings.
Johnson is a San Francisco native and he apparently had some time to chat with Goldson on Thursday:
"I just asked him, 'Who would you want to go to?' Out of his lips, he was talking about Buffalo a lot," Johnson said. "I'm, like, 'Man!'
"Hopefully, we give him an offer."
Earlier today, the Bills placed their franchise tag on free safety Jairus Byrd. This would not be a hinderance to adding Goldson from a financial or position perspective. The Bills new defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, reportedly did not designate between free and strong safety while with the Jets. This would allow the Bills to mix and match Goldson and Byrd. They released strong safety George Wilson and currently sit with approximately $16 million in cap space once you factor in the Byrd franchise tag.
If the 49ers remain interested in extending Goldson, it will be interesting what kind of pitch Donte Whitner provides. The former Bills safety was not pleased with the Bills system. Things appear to be changing so Whitner's sales pitch against Buffalo might have to focus on the fact that it is mighty different weather than in San Francisco.
