Football-driven expansion has a price, and part of the price is curtailing the Duke-State rivalry, one of many across the nation to be de-emphasized.
As Dana O’ Neill points out, it’s also happened to Indiana and Tennessee. We don’t care much what happens there, but it’s a shame that Duke and State are forced to ratchet back. One hopes the ACC at some point will figure out a way to accommodate rivalries.
The ACC gets a chance to make football pay off next weekend as Virginia Tech opens with mighty Alabama, UNC visits South Carolina and Clemson hosts Georgia. Doing well in these games would be an immense boost for football.
