Ohio State once again opened electrically, lost some serious stream, but this week regained a bit of momentum to have a more comfortable win than they'd had in Week 1 against Buffalo. Though the margin was less than last week's over San Diego State, the Buckeyes' victory over Cal overall felt more "solid", perhaps in large part due to the increased degree of difficulty.
Until the Buckeyes play host to Wisconsin in a few weeks, the Golden Bears will have marked Ohio State's toughest test to date – and they passed with flying colors. Sure, Bradley Roby had a day he hopes won't define him when it comes to being evaluated on tape for NFL franchises this coming March/April. And yeah, tackling at times felt a little concerning. Still, the Buckeyes went on the road, played a game that felt like a night one to their internal clocks, and looked the part of a Top 5 team.
Let's take a look at some of the key plays from Saturday's win and a few of the highlights Ohio State fans will be discussing for the better part of the next week.
Guiton rekindled the magic on the very next drive. Another fast start for Ohio State:
Ryan Shazier gonna Ryan Shazier. A nice forced fumble by the junior:
Kenny Guiton to Chris Fields. Pay dirt. Again:
Not a great showcase for the Ohio State secondary right there:
Nice pick by Christian Bryant, who had himself a night:
Dontre Wilson showing the jets:
More Dontre Wilson from later in the game:
Jordan Hall gets his:
Incredible diving catch by Cal:
This is what you can do when your starting quarterback and punter wear the same number:
Kenny Guiton, running the option to perfection and setting up another Ohio State score:
Jordan Hall, makes it look easy, going airborne:
Dontre Wilson is not even fair:
Kenny Guiton finds Corey "Philly" Brown for good measure:
And a perfect shovel pass to Jordan Hall to set up another score:
Noah Spence gets a sack:
Jordan Hall gets in one more time for good measure:
