Although the federal shutdown threatened to give Duke a two-week layoff, the Navy game is indeed on.
At some point in the farce, the powers that be decided that football is okay, so off we go.
Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who took over for Paul Johnson when Johnson moved to Georgia Tech.
We thought Navy might take a step back, but didn’t happen: Niumatalolo has done a tremendous job at Annapolis. He’s maintained the triple option and Navy is no more fun to play now than it was under Johnson.
So far, Navy has beaten Indiana (41-35), Delaware (51-7) and Air Force (28-10). They lost to Western Kentucky 28-10.
On the downside, Johnson ran a very similar offense as Tech beat Duke soundly a few weeks ago. On the plus side, Duke has more experience now and can watch the Navy film for defensive ideas.
It could be an explosive game. We hope the students turn out – should be fun!
