We’re very pleased to say that a reader has offered us two Duke-signed basketballs for auction, the first of which is posted as of this morning. This ball is either from 1986-87 or the following year. We’re reasonably confident that it’s the former.
It is probably not a collectibles standard ball as a couple of the signatures are nearly worn off, but for a Duke fan, it’s just about priceless: the 1986 team is always going to be a legendary group that put Duke’s program firmly back on the map, but in it’s own way, the Tommy Amaker-led 1987 team, with Billy King, Kevin Strickland, Quin Snyder, Danny Ferry, Robert Brickey and the late Phil Henderson, was just as important if not more so. This was the team which made it clear that the powerhouse ’86 team was no fluke. Duke was back and not going away.
The donor named DBR as his beneficiary, so bidding on the ball will help the site as well.
