UNC’s situation grew a great deal more complicated Friday as indictments were handed up by an Orange County grand jury.
Five indictments, still sealed, loom over the athletic department like neutron bombs. We’re guessing at least one or two are for agents and possibly all of them are. It’s entirely possible though that Black Santa (aka John Blake) could be indicted, or Butch Davis, or Julius Nyang’oro or his former assistant Deborah Crowder or perhaps the tutor, Jennifer Wiley. It could also be former players.
To an extent it may not matter. We’d expect the state to offer deals for testimony, and though the targets are more likely agents than athletes or coaches (or tutor), they could use any of them to get at the agents. And sworn testimony could just reopen the whole NCAA process.
We’ve been saying for some time that UNC should just push every bit of this out in public and get it over with. Now it’s out of the university’s hands. The Carolina way is damaged beyond recognition and there’s no clear road back. We enjoy the rivalry as much as anyone, but we never wanted this. It’s awful.
