Here’s Coach K talking a bit about his relationship with and respect for Dean Smith. Like Norm Sloan, Coach K says that the competitive nature of their early relationship made it hard for them to be friends, but after Smith’s retirement, they became much closer.
In Sloan’s case, he told a sad story about approaching Smith on a golf course with something close to remorse for how heated their working relationship had been, uncertain if Smith would want to talk to him, only to find out that he actually liked the guy – and Smith liked him as well. You got the feeling that as much as he must have loved coaching, he found that some of it came at a cost.
K ended up vacationing next door to Smith at the beach this summer, which was probably cool for both families. When you take guys like this out of the pit, who else could they possibly relate to? It’s a small fraternity, smaller still at the very top.
