Here we see Jason Kidd reminiscing about Cal’s upset of Duke in 1993. What we remember about that game is the game before: after Duke beat LSU, Dale Brown, we always thought malevolently, said Cal had absolutely no chance of beating Duke.
Overnight, Cal went from being a team with a mediocre coach and a bunch of freshmen to a team with a cause.
We always thought he felt that since he couldn’t beat Duke, he’d help someone else do it.
Whatever got Kidd there, though, it was a statement game, a flawless, near genius-level performance. He was incredible.
We didn’t appreciate Brown, but you’d have to be a bit odd not to appreciate Kidd’s brilliant grasp of the game that night. He was something else.
