That's right, George Springer and Jonathan Singleton both hit home runs and this time it wasn't an in the park homer for Springer. If you haven't seen the video yet, Springer hit an in the park home run on Saturday that showed his speed and grit. You have to love the guy. If you don't....well I don't like you either. Wojo continued to flaunt his mojo but I am beginning to have some serious concerns about his peripheral stats. He's enjoying success, there's no doubt. But the strikeouts and groundball rate need some work. Not saying they won't come around, just that he may not be quite ready to join the majors in the case of a trade.
Domingo Santana built a lot of hype last year, but it was hype that came with a disclaimer as his home park was Lancaster. This season, he hasn't posted the same extreme numbers from a year ago, but we at least know that the power is legitimate. After yesterday's game, he now has seventeen home runs with a little over a month left in the season. As a younger than average prospect for AA, that is no small feat.
It was rought night on the mound. Blair Walters was the only pitcher for Lancaster to go unscathed as even the Cal League hero, Kenny Long couldn't pitch his way out of trouble. But, Delino DeShields was a double away from the cycle and joinging the likes of Brandon Barnes as JetHawk to hit for the cycle.
Fifteen hits. Yep...thats a bunch. This team seems to just feed off each other. They either put together a few hits or everyone just piles on their hits all at once. I bet this team is a lot of fun to watch live when they are all hitting together. Rio Ruiz is one of those guys. Yesterday he picked up three hits and while his season numbers are modest, especially the batting average, he has been a beast at the plate since the All-Star Break for the Midwest League. Remember that he didn't play much of anything his senior year and only played a limited amount last year in the pros. A full season league assignment was aggressive, but now that he's adjusted, his potential is shining.
The runs were low, but the pitching staff gave up thirteen hits which will lead to damage almost every time. They battled for sure by limiting all those baserunners so props still have to be given. They gave the team a chance to win but the offense just didn't have much to it. Michael Feliz continues to be an exciting prospect when there's two strikes as he once again was able to sit down more than his fair share.
The team is back on target to get another win streak going as they lost last Friday to end the last one at thirteen. This team is slowly garnering talent on the roster with some intriguing later round picks. The pitching staff has been the highlight for this team without a doubt as they rank near the top of every statisical category. Jandel Gustave has been a guy that has been talked about quite a bit since he came out of nowhere hitting 98 on the gun. His walks have been a big surprise this season, but he took a step back yesterday in that department. Hopefully he'll get back on track as despite his struggles yesterday still limited damage.
