The San Francisco 49ers have made some roster moves. The team announced on Tuesday they have waived quarterback B.J. Daniels and fullback Owen Marecic, and signed linebacker Jermaine Cunningham. According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers are expected to fill the second roster spot with QB John Skelton. The 49ers worked out Skelton last month. Well, alright then.
Cunningham was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Since then, he has played in 36 games with 14 starts, recording 67 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was waived/injured at the end of training camp, and the team agreed to an injury settlement with him, rather than place him on injured reserve. I am not sure what the injury was that resulted in his waived/injured status.
We now have to wait 24 hours to see if Daniels clears waivers. If he clears waivers, he becomes an free agent, and can sign with the 49ers practice squad, assuming the 49ers actually want to make that move. We'll find out more tomorrow.
The Skelton decision is peculiar. They already have Colt McCoy on the roster, and if they lose Colin Kaepernick and McCoy, wouldn't we all agree the season has gone just a little bit south? It's all rather odd. Someone feel free to explain this one to me.
