It’s hard to find a better pairing than chocolate and champagne.

Luckily for us -- and just in time for the holiday season -- El Meson is hosting the return of The Chocolate & Champagne Tasting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19.

>> This local shop has amazing holiday-themed donuts

“We had such a great time with this event last year,” said Bill Castro, owner of El Meson. “This time of year shouldn’t just be errands and obligations, but a chance to take time with family and friends to come together and celebrate!”

One way to beat the winter blahs is by channeling summer.

The Yellow Cab Tavern in Dayton will host a Mid-Winter Beach Party on Friday, Jan. 26.

The event will feature tiki drinks, a food truck, limbo contest, tropical music, and a projected video on the wall of a sunny beach all night long.

>> PHOTOS: Harry Potter night at Yellow Cab

“It’s been a cold and snowy winter,” David Obenour, event promoter said. “The Beach Party is all about pulling out the Hawaiian shirt from the closet, getting together with friends and forgetting that it’s maybe single-digits outside.”

The Beach Party also serves as a clothing drive for Dayton’s local refugee community.

Working with Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley and Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley, attendees are encouraged to bring donations of clothing (winter or summer) to the party, which Goodwill will turn into vouchers for winter clothing for families relocated to Dayton.

“Ohio winters, particularly this one, can be brutal even if you’ve lived here your whole life,” Obenour said. “Many of those relocated here to Dayton have never even seen snow, so getting them appropriate clothing is crucial.”

Dayton Music Insider: Losing a Legend

This week the Dayton music community suffered an absolutely heartbreaking loss. Mick Montgomery, beloved owner of Canal Street Tavern , passed away in his sleep.

How does one start to describe all that Mick contributed to our community and culture? It’s an impossible task. The thing I admired most about him was his single minded determination to bring original music to Dayton. In a time when cover bands dominated the bar scene, Mick wanted his own club, so original musicians had a voice. At Canal St, Mick got to perform his own music, and along the way, inspired countless others to do the same. His tenacity, enthusiasm for all types of music, and many personal sacrifices, helped produce a vibrant Dayton music scene, that is renowned to this day. He leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

More than that, Mick was a true friend, and even father figure, to many. All the music lovers in this town owe him a enormous debt of gratitude for everything he gave us. Thank you, Mick, for the memories, your friendship, and of course, the music. We love you! This weekend, when you’re out seeing live music, please raise a glass to his memory.

Two new acts on my radar are performing at South Park Tavern on Friday night: Salt Orchard and Adele Backus. Always enjoy a cozy night at SPT, so checkout some new music while you’re at it! Show from  10pm – 1am.

Every Friday, exclusively at Watermark  restaurant in Miamisburg, Kevin Dumont and   Jeon McConnell  perform sultry sounds of the saxophone. Looking for a fantastic date night? This is it! Enjoy some top notch cuisine, along with great music from 8:30-10:30pm.

Oscar’s Bar is offering a sizzling night of live original electronica to Vandalia, featuring the musical trifecta, Echo Mecca, Goodnight Goodnight and Curse of Cassandra ! This is truly a line-up not to be missed! 9pm – 12am. $5 cover.

Rachel Litteral & The Abstracts brings their blues-rock to Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs for a mid winter warm up. Come on out and shake it with them! 10pm. No cover.

Saturday January 20th

Saturday is when the Dayton music community collectively celebrates the life of Mick Montgomery. A drop in service will be held from 1-4pm at Tobias Funeral Home at 3970 Dayton Xenia Rd in Beavercreek. Afterwards, at 6pm, his family and friends will gather at The Brightside Event and Music Venue (905 E 3rd St. Dayton, OH) to throw a proper Hootenanny in his honor.

The Hootenanny is a free event that is open to anyone interested in celebrating Mick’s life. It’s a family style pot luck, so please bring some kind of dish, desert or snack to share. There is a cash bar (no outside alcohol, please). Non-alcoholic beverages are available as well. Anyone interested in signing up to play a song at the Hootenanny will sign up when they arrive to the event space. Children are welcome earlier in the evening. The event will run until 2am. Parking information is posted on the event page here.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to support the Dayton music community and the folks at Bright Side: or at the venue itself. Online condolences may be sent to

We can’t predict these type of losses, so naturally many other shows were already booked for Saturday night. Mick would have wanted everyone to keep playing their music and so we shall! Over at Blind Bob’s  you can catch  Nightbeast, Jack O’Shea (guitarist of Bayside from NY) , and RINDThis is going to be a rockin’ party night that will be fun, fun, fun! Love these bands! 9pm. $5 cover. 21+

Two of my favorite locals acts Nasty Bingo  and The Boxcar Suite  are performing at Hannah’s.  These talented folks perform an fun mix of blues, rock, and Americana. 9pm-1am. $5 cover.

It’s a night of serious rock’n’roll with Far From Eden, Earth Tongue , & This Blessed Hatred at Hanks Pub  on Patterson. It’s going to be a fun night at this neighborhood bar! 9pm No cover. 18+

North of town, don’t miss the ferocious band Tiger Sex , along with Filthy Lowdown, Negative Protein and Fuzzmuck at Oscar’s Bar in Vandalia. It promises to be “loud, live and raw” in there! 9pm. $5 at the door. 21+.

Grateful Dead fans, don’t miss the very talented tribute act Arrows of Neon at One Eyed Jacks.  These guys always put a smile on my face! Two full sets start at 10pm. No cover!

Also in Miamisburg, don’t forget about the live jazz most days of the week at   Blue Note Bistro & Lounge . Check their  site for their full schedule, which features early set times, so it works great as a date night!
