Hobart Welding plant in Troy to move 54 jobs to Wisconsin

Troy city officials were not aware of plans for relocation of the Hobart Welding Products equipment plant to Wisconsin until the mayor was included in a conference call late Monday afternoon.

Mayor Mike Beamish said Tuesday the relocation affecting 54 employees in Troy “is a setback, but then an opportunity, too, to grow and expand.”

All 54 employees of the equipment plant in Troy have been given the opportunity to relocate with the company’s manufacturing and warehouse operations to Appleton, Wis., Becky Tuchscherer, group president, said Tuesday.

The Hobart Welding Products equipment plant will be relocating manufacturing and warehouse operations to Appleton, Wis., during the next several months.

In an announcement released Monday evening, officials with Hobart’s sister company, Miller Electric, said the move is in order to align all machine assembly, warehousing, and customer service within existing operations at Miller, which already produces a number of Hobart equipment products.

Affected employees in the Troy workforce will be offered opportunities in similar roles at the facilities in Appleton or are eligible to apply for open positions in any of the local business units. Any remaining displaced employees will be offered separation packages and other assistance services.

“This move is being made to fully leverage the assets we have across the welding enterprise,” Tuchscherer said in a prepared statement.

“This decision to move in no way reflects the level of skill and dedication of our workforce here. We appreciate the long standing support of the Troy community. Our commitment to the community remains strong, as the Hobart Brothers Company Filler Metal businesses will continue to operate in all existing facilities, with headquarters in Troy.”
